I tried these detour destinations myself and I can confirm they are a must-see for everyone who wants an exciting holiday in 2026 but doesn’t want to deal with the crowds.
Even with the fuel shortages in Europe and the increasing prices of the flights, people still travel way more than before. Places like Barcelona report multiple issues related to overtourism and people sometimes have to queue for ages to take their selfie with a famous view in the background.
If you don’t like the crowds and prefer stress-free exploration of beautiful, yet not-that-popular destinations, this list is for you.
Mdina and Rabat
Malta is on the wish list of many travellers and there are millions of good reasons why. While Valletta gives you this “King’s Landing” feel, did you know that the location used for the scenes outside of Petyr Baelish’s brothel was actually Mdina. This is a small historical town a short bus ride from Valletta.
While still popular with tourists, I found it less crowded than central Valletta and I had the opportunity to get lost in time walking along the narrow streets of Mdina, without encountering major crowds.
Bonus: Explore the colourful houses of Rabat – just next to Mdina.
Dresden
Just a quick bus ride from Prague, this German town is an architectural jewel! This Baroque City is simply magical – it has a cozy atmosphere, friendly locals and buildings that will take your breath away!
Residenzschloss, The Zwinger, Frauenkirche, Schlossplatz – the list goes on and on. I couldn’t recommend this place more if you are into history, design, architecture and sightseeing.
Antwerp
Another quick bus ride, but this time from Brussels. The historical centre of Antwerp with Nello & Patrasche Statue, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedraal and the houses neatly lined around the squares offers a lot of beautiful sights, yet it’s not packed with people – so you can take your time and as much photos as you want!
Scheveningen
You know about Amsterdam and about the Hague, but did you know about Scheveningen? This is a beach area in the Hague offering the opportunity for a relaxed long stroll along the North Sea coast. Days in the summer are very long and evenings on the beach are a great way to unwind.
Brighton
While almost everyone dreams of visiting London, they don’t realise that just south of it, there is a gem that most tourists don’t even think about. About an hour away from London, Brighton is a colourful, full of life city with a stoney beach and unique party culture.
Brighton is on the UK coastal path and you can enjoy amazing views around the city, just by following the coastline.
Formia
I have recently visited Sorrento and Formia. While Sorrento is popular with tourists, offering a view over Vesuvius and the bay of Naples, I was charmed by the quiet tranquillity of Formia.
This small town between Naples and Rome is well connected by train lines and mostly popular with Italian tourists. It has sunny sandy beaches, but at the same time offers the opportunity for mountain hikes. It has something for everyone, including a laid-back relaxing vibe that will help you rest and recharge.
